Respect, innovation and dialogue between worlds

An original painting was enhanced, without altering its visible appearance, by integrating a comprehensive suite of embedded sensors and secure connectivity, all discreetly housed within a custom-built frame.
The primary goal was to enable real-time monitoring of environmental and security conditions while preserving the painting’s untouched aesthetic and historical integrity.

Custom Sensor Frame

A handcrafted frame was specifically designed to hold all electronics, ensuring no direct modification to the original artwork.
All sensors and hardware are concealed within the frame, maintaining the painting’s visual and historic authenticity.

Because all electronics are hidden within the frame, the original artwork remains visually unaltered—retaining its authenticity while acquiring a “smart” layer of protection. In short, the team transformed a static painting into a fully instrumented IoT asset—blending advanced sensor fusion (environmental, motion, and proximity) with military-grade secure networking—without ever disturbing the painting’s original appearance

Key Components & Functionality

Environmental Sensing

  • Temperature and humidity sensors continuously track micro-climate conditions to support optimal conservation.

  • A light-level sensor measures illumination intensity (lux), detecting lighting conditions outside safe thresholds.

  • A GPS module provides real-time geolocation to confirm the painting’s location at all times.

Motion & Presence Detection

  • Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors monitor tilt, vibration, and movement, triggering alerts for accidental bumps or potential theft.

  • A laser-based proximity sensor detects when someone approaches or stands directly in front of the painting, enabling interactive features such as activating lighting or sending a “viewing started” notification.

Secure Data Transmission

Sensor data is transmitted via Swisscom’s secure private LTE network, guaranteeing end-to-end encryption and protection against interception.
